When you use an AI model, there is a good chance you are speaking to it in English.

That is not necessarily because English is the language most people in the world speak. It is because the modern AI ecosystem has been built disproportionately around English and a relatively small number of other high-resource languages.

This matters.

Africa is home to more than 2,000 languages, from widely spoken languages such as Kiswahili, Hausa and Amharic to thousands of community and indigenous languages. Yet most of the data, benchmarks, research and computational resources used to build language technologies have historically been concentrated in a much smaller group of languages.

The result is a familiar paradox: AI is becoming increasingly accessible across Africa, but the technology is not necessarily becoming equally accessible to Africans in the languages they use every day.

Language is not simply a matter of convenience. It determines who can ask a question, who can understand an answer, who can access a service and, increasingly, who can participate in the AI economy.

The language problem

The number of AI users in Africa continues to grow, but the continent is not only consuming AI. Researchers, startups, governments and universities are also building systems designed for African contexts.

One of the biggest challenges is language.

Consider Kenya's agricultural sector. Agriculture remains a major part of Kenya's economy and employs millions of people, many of them smallholder farmers in rural areas. For many of these communities, English is not the language in which they are most comfortable communicating.

That creates an obvious problem for AI-powered agricultural tools.

A farmer should not have to become proficient in English before being able to ask an AI system what is wrong with their crop, when to plant, how much fertiliser to use or what a particular pest is doing to their farm.

There are already efforts to address this gap.

iSDA's Virtual Agronomist, for example, provides agricultural advice through WhatsApp, using information such as soil data, weather conditions and crop information to provide tailored recommendations. The organisation has also begun developing versions in local languages, including Kinyarwanda, while testing voice-based interaction.

These efforts point towards something important: the future of African AI cannot simply be about taking an existing global model and making it available on the continent. It also has to be about building systems that understand African languages, contexts and ways of communicating.

This is particularly difficult because many African languages are considered low-resource languages in AI research. There may be comparatively little digitised text, speech data or high-quality translation data available to train models. There are also fewer established benchmarks with which to evaluate how well a model actually understands a language.

In other words, the problem is not simply that an AI model has not been \"taught\" enough vocabulary.

It may lack the data required to understand context, cultural references, dialects, idioms, code-switching and the different ways people actually use the language.

This is where projects such as Masakhane have become important. The research community was established specifically to advance natural language processing and machine translation for African languages, recognising that Africa's linguistic diversity has historically been poorly represented in NLP research.

The connectivity problem

Language is only one side of the problem.

An AI system can be perfectly designed for a rural farmer and still be practically useless if that farmer cannot reliably access it.

According to the GSMA's Mobile Economy Africa 2026 report, only 25% of Africa’s population connected to mobile internet in 2025 due to issues of affordability, accessibility and digital literacy. This distinction is important.

Africa's connectivity problem is not simply a story about whether a mobile network exists. It is also about whether people can afford a smartphone and data, whether they have the digital skills to use online services, and whether the services available to them are relevant enough to justify going online.

GSMA describes this as a usage gap. For AI, that gap becomes even more complicated.

Imagine a farmer sending a voice note in a local language to an AI agricultural assistant.

The interaction might look something like this:

The system converts the farmer's speech into text.

2. Machine Translation (MT)
If the core model does not adequately support the farmer's language, the text may be translated into a higher-resource language such as English.

3. AI model / reasoning layer
The system processes the request, retrieves relevant information — potentially including soil, weather or agricultural data — and generates an answer.

↓

4. Machine Translation (MT)
The answer is translated back into the farmer's language.

↓

5. Text-to-Speech (TTS)
The translated answer is converted back into speech.

This is not necessarily how every African-language AI system works. In fact, one of the goals of better African-language models should be to reduce the dependence on this kind of translation-heavy architecture.

But the example illustrates the additional layers that can be introduced when the underlying AI system does not directly and reliably support the language a user speaks.

Every additional service can introduce latency, cost, another potential failure point and another opportunity for meaning to be lost.

A farmer asking a question about a crop disease does not necessarily need an AI system that can translate their words into English. They need an AI system that understands what they mean.

This is about more than translation

It is tempting to think of the African AI language problem as a translation problem.

It is much bigger than that.

Translation asks whether an AI system can convert a sentence from one language into another. Understanding asks whether the system can correctly interpret the context behind that sentence and respond appropriately.

For example, a farmer might use a local expression for a particular pest or agricultural condition that does not have a direct English equivalent. They might switch between languages within the same sentence. They might describe a problem using local knowledge that is not contained in an English-language agricultural database.

A system that simply translates the words may still miss the meaning.

This is one reason why the development of African-language AI requires more than adding languages to existing interfaces. It requires better datasets, speech collections, benchmarks, linguistic research and models trained and evaluated in African contexts.

There is also a sovereignty question.

If a farmer's voice is converted into text, translated into another language, sent to a model hosted elsewhere, processed using infrastructure outside the continent and then translated back, who owns the data?

Where is that data stored?

Who controls the infrastructure?

Who decides how the model is trained?

And who benefits economically from the interaction?

These questions become increasingly important as AI moves from being an experimental technology to becoming infrastructure for agriculture, healthcare, education, finance and government services.

This is where the conversation around African AI sovereignty becomes more than a policy slogan.

What does this mean?

For startups, governments and technology companies the opportunity is enormous, but so is the gap.

Building an AI platform for an African market is not enough if the people it is designed to serve cannot afford the data required to access it.

Building a language model is not enough if it performs poorly in the languages spoken by the people it is supposed to serve.

Translating an English-language AI system into an African language is not necessarily the same thing as building an AI system that understands that language.

The African AI opportunity therefore sits at the intersection of three problems: language, connectivity and infrastructure.

Solving one without the others will only take the continent so far.

There is, however, reason for optimism.

African researchers and institutions are increasingly building datasets, models and tools for African languages. Projects such as Masakhane have demonstrated the value of community-led research, while newer initiatives are bringing governments, telecommunications companies, universities and technology companies into the same conversation.

The question now is whether these efforts can move from promising individual projects to durable infrastructure.

If they can, the impact could extend well beyond chatbots.

An AI system that understands a farmer's language could make agricultural advice more accessible. A healthcare assistant that understands local speech could make health information easier to access. A government service that communicates in the languages citizens actually use could reduce barriers to public services.

The goal should be building models that understand African languages, infrastructure that can support African users and governance frameworks that keep African data and decision-making closer to the people and communities generating them.

The future of AI in Africa will not be determined only by how many people use ChatGPT or how many startups raise money to build AI applications.

It will also be determined by something much more fundamental:
